Lanny Dean is truly a unique
individual. His passion for storm chasing is an inspiring
story worthy of a big budget Hollywood movie depicting
true character of a real professional storm chaser.
We are honored to select Lanny as a premier severe weather
reporter of the year. Although iPixcel is not a rating
entity for broadcast awards, we truly feel Lanny deservs
recognition of all his peers and all other media outlets
chasing storm while trying to save lives.
Due to the nature of our
business which is software development marketing to
Media TV stations, we meet and equip plenty of other
professional chasers, photo journalists and News Gathering
teams with state-of-the-art broadcast gear where no
other traditional video transmission can operate. Currently
we have a small army of chasers and news teams spreading
across 11 TV stations using iSOFTVideo
software to chase breaking news and severe weather via
wireless networks such as Sprint, Inmarsat, Verizon.
Lanny is above all, a unique
individual with a modest personality and a big heart.
I live for this, lanny says. When asked when he started
his journey chasing storm, we were impressed to hear
that he had his first scientific forecast at the age
of 10! developed in his own weather lab. lanny is a
proud product of an Oklahoma family born and raised
in Oklahoma. He was born on June 4th, 1973. His most
vivid memory of his childhood is when he was just a
small child enjoying outdoor playing on a swing set,
a gift from his grandpa!. It was a stormy spring evening
in 1981 where his passion to search the skies started.
Let's all go in kids, Grandpa said to lanny and his
sister playing the swing set. There is going to be a
weather front coming.
The events of next few
minutes watching an F2 scale tornado blasting through
the Oklahoma land and destroying the entire area including
his grand father's property and catle left little Lanny
amazed, confused but generated a burning desire to chase
severe weather patterns continuing to this date.
Lanny has been chasing
tornado and severe weather now for 14 years. He has
been an avid photographer working for Media TV and his
own private business capturing incredible video footage
of severe weather. He has chased an average of 14 tornados
each year across Oklahoma, Kansas and surrounding states
resulting in hours of awesome video footage nobody else
dares to acquire. It is like a powerful drug, the side
effects are total elation and draw backs are depressing
when I am not out there chasing!, Lanny says.
First Cam truck -
KAKE 10, Wichita, KS
His knowledge of severe
weather is truly impressive. His last bout with the
tornado happened when he was dispatched
to cover tornadic activities across the Kansas plains
for KAKE 10, an ABC affiliate
in Wichita, KS. I was surrounded by multiple
vortexes and had nowhere to escape, Lanny says. Lanny
had to make a life and death decision where he was covering
the public safety news for KAKE. In a flash of seconds,
a massive chunk of debries from the effected area started
to pour from the sky. An F2 scale tornado packing winds
at 160 miles an hour was within 300 feet along with
multiple whirlwinds of destructive forces capable of
flipping cars, trucks and anything in their path. A
big piece of debries was coming at me while I was shooting
video LIVE back to the KAKE First
Alert Weather Center. I had a split of a second
to maneuver the truck in attempt to avoid direct collision
with the massive debry. 2 Seconds later a big bang and
partial destruction of his new truck. Events of next
few seconds resulting from 14 years of expedience in
chasing the most awesome forces of nature saved his
life, salvaged his truck and Lanny managed to keep the
camera rolling while LIVE footage was transmitted to
KAKE weather lab.
Lanny, Lanny, are you alright?,
Jay Prater, CBM & Managing
Meteorologist at KAKE 10 shouting at the
cell phone on LIVE TV while Lanny is cut, bruised, bleeding
and trying to make his great escape. Go East immediatly,
now...., Jay crying on air!.
I'll do it again, Lanny
says...
Lanny is truly our hero
of the day. His compliments & comments regarding
how good the iPixcel system functioned while he was
trying to save his life was truly humbling experience
for us. Our hats off to you Lanny. Thank you for your
dedication to a profession where not everybody has the
guts to take on.
