Designing with Microsoft Video Optimization SDK from Microsoft Research Lab:

Research continues...

Based on research prototype and a next generation codec for Video Optimization which was designed by Microsoft, code name "Microsoft Portrait©", cMyPal™ Video Conferencing software offers unparalleled functionality and performance, when used over wireless networks. Current wireless networks still work in low bandwidths, and mobile devices still suffer from weak computational power, short battery lifetime, and limited display capability. Software by iPixCel introduces a very low bit-rate video coding technique, which can be used in Video Communications almost anywhere and almost any time on selected devices.

The core functionality of this new compression method is that rather than giving highest priority to the basic colors of an image as in conventional DCT-based compression methods (such as off the shelf H.264 codecs), we give preference to the outline features of scenes when we have limited bandwidth. These features can be represented by bi-level image sequences that are converted from gray-scale image sequences. By analyzing the temporal correlation between successive frames and flexibilities in the scene presentation, we achieve very high ratios video compression scheme. Experiments show that in low bandwidths, our proposed method provides clearer shape, smoother motion, shorter initial latency, and much cheaper computational cost than do standard DCT-based methods. Our method is especially suitable for small mobile devices such as tablet PCs, palm-size PCs, and mobile phones that possess small display screens and light computational power, and work in low bandwidth wireless networks. We have built PC and Tablet PC versions, which typically provide QCIF-size video with a frame rate of 5 to 15 Frames per Second (FPS) for as little as 9.6 Kilobits per second (Kbps) up to broadband bandwidth.

Beamatron


Beamatron is a new, augmented-reality concept that combines a projector and a Kinect camera on a pan-tilt moving head. The moving head is used to place the projected image almost anywhere in a room. Meanwhile, the depth camera enables the correct warping of the displayed image for the shape of the projection surface and for the projected graphics to react in physically appropriate ways. For example, a projected virtual car can be driven on the floor of the room but will bump into obstacles or run over ramps. As another application, we consider the ability to bring notifications and other graphics to the attention of the user by automatically placing the graphics within the user’s view.
